About the event

If you're reading this you may be looking for ways to mitigate the effects of the Menopause, or for ways to prepare yourself for what's to come.

It may seem like a leap of faith to even consider that the way we breathe might impact on hormonal health, but did you know that the incidence of sleep apnea increases by 200% in females after age 50? Sleep apnea and breathing are intimately linked which means that attending to our breathing can be highly advantageous. And it's interesting to note that panic disorder is two to three times more likely to occur in women, plus anxiety is more likely to be prevalent. Each of these corresponds to hormonal fluctuations and invariably involves hyperventilation, ie breathing faster than our body needs.

So, in addition to sleep issues and anxiety, this workshop will also look at the relevance of re-establishing good breathing patterns to better manage other aspects of this transition: hot flushes, bone health, pelvic floor function and even weight gain.

What will I take away from this event?

  • Research backed information about the relevance of breathing through Menopause
  • An understanding of the biochemistry (the gases) of breathing as well as the biomechanical dimension (the breathing muscles, especially the diaphragm) and the importance of cadence (slow breathing).
  • Exercises to address all 3 dimensions as well as advice about which of them to prioritise for your own requirements.
  • How to evaluate your own breathing without the need for specialised equipment.

The information and breathing re-education advice included in this 90 minute workshop should enable you to retrain your own breathing without any further assistance. Of course, there are various factors that impact on whether or not this is easy to achieve: we each have a different starting point, different demands on our time, different levels of motivation (which can be affected by menopausal changes) and sometimes the simple need not to go it alone, or to have more individual attention. If it transpires that you would benefit from a one-to-one program, then attendance at this workshop will constitute your first session and a corresponding discount of 25% will be applied.

About Annette

This event is run by Annette, one half of Henry and Henry. She has applied breathing techniques for her own needs, not least long-term sleep issues, worsened by Menopause. She is a qualified Buteyko Breathing Instructor which is a method with an emphasis on managing health issues. She is also a certified Oxygen Advantage Functional Breathing Instructor with an emphasis on regaining or improving focus, concentration and the ability to enjoy more movement or physical exercise.

"I make no claims of miraculous healing, but I can say with certainty that if breathing is suboptimal, then optimal health will be compromised. By retraining how we breathe we can make noteworthy changes, some of them small, some of them wonderfully significant." ~ Annette Henry
